Broward County and Duval County, Fla. - In honor of what would have been automotive pioneer and philanthropist Jim Moran's 96th birthday on August 8th, The Jim Moran Foundation awarded two grants for $96,000 each to Alzheimer's Family Center in Margate and The Senior Life Foundation in Jacksonville. The funding will help elderly individuals maintain their well-being while remaining self-sufficient in their homes or with loved ones. Every year, The Foundation celebrates Jim Moran's life with Founder's Day grants -- one in North Florida and one in South Florida.

"Having lost his father at an early age, my husband knew what it was like to take on the responsibilities of caring for family members," said Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation. "He believed everyone should be treated with courtesy, kindness and respect - particularly seniors, who are among the most vulnerable members of our communities. In partnership with Alzheimer's Family Center and The Senior Life Foundation, we are continuing his legacy of consideration and compassion."

Alzheimer's Family Center provides holistic services to help families cope with their older relatives' memory disorders. This grant will fund its caregiver support groups at five locations throughout Broward County - Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale, Lauderhill and Sunrise - as well as its new Crisis In-Home Respite Care program if a caregiver becomes ill, has a family emergency or does not qualify for another crisis service. With the center's intervention and education, families can often remain together and prevent premature placement in a facility.

"We are privileged to have been selected to receive the Founder's Day Grant," said Joyce Karney, executive director of Alzheimer's Family Center. "We believe it is a two-fold blessing. This will surely benefit our aging seniors who need essential services to maintain quality of life.  It also brings focus to the needs of the elderly. So often our seniors are the forgotten people and many foundations simply will not fund that age group. There is no shelf life on people. The elderly deserve respect, care and attention -- and they should be valued and remembered for past accomplishments, for they are the core of our society. We greatly appreciate The Jim Moran Foundation for believing in all people and granting these funds enabling us to provide necessary assistance."

The Senior Life Foundation responds quickly to low-income seniors facing economic crisis such as imminent eviction, utility disconnection or the inability to pay for daily living expenses, medication and food. This funding will directly aid elderly individuals through the organization's Emergency Help Line, AfterCare for Seniors, Clean Houses for Seniors, Clear Sight for Seniors, Saving Our Seniors Energy and other assistance programs.

"We are overjoyed to think of the assistance this grant will provide to the elderly to allow them to maintain their well-being and independence in their own homes," said Mari Terbrueggen, chief executive officer of The Senior Life Foundation. "When I think of the worn, tired and frail faces of the seniors that we serve, it warms my heart to know we will be able to provide more food, shelter, medical assistance and prescriptions - items that we take for granted that are so far out of their reach. The Senior Life Foundation is honored to receive this grant and grateful to a great and generous man and his wonderful foundation for making it possible. Equally rewarding is the fact we will not have to turn away low-income seniors due to lack of funds. Mr. Moran would be pleased that his hard work and solid values continue to impact so many in desperate need."
