The Jim Moran Foundation Helps Families Raising Loved One's Children
The Jim Moran Foundation has awarded a $59,000 grant to Families First of Palm Beach County to support its unique Kin Support Project which provides information, counseling, support groups and linkage to legal services to grandparents and other relatives raising loved ones' children.
In Palm Beach County as in the rest of the country, more and more grandparents and other relatives are being thrust into the position of raising a loved one's children. Those parenting another's children and the children in their care face unique challenges, including legal issues, financial burden, separation and loss, isolation and a lack of information, to name a few.
In response to that growing need, in 2002, Families First of Palm Beach County gathered partners, including Barry University, to create the Kin Support Project to help relatives understand their rights, and identify and meet their needs. In 2004, the Legal Aid Society joined the project to offer legal assistance to these families.
Today, the innovative Kin Support Project provides comprehensive home and community-based social work and legal services to assist kinship families in achieving stability and quality family life. The project is designed to educate and empower relative caregiver families by increasing their knowledge and use of essential community resources, as well as create informal networks among caregivers that encourage self-sufficiency.
"We are grateful for The Jim Moran Foundation's support of this unique program. We are proud to be able to provide comprehensive services that are so needed by this growing family dynamic," said Julie Swindler, CEO of Families First.
