The Sanctuary on 8th Street Receives Three-Year Grant from The Jim Moran Foundation
Jacksonville, FL - The Jim Moran Foundation has awarded a three-year grant to the Sanctuary on 8th Street to support the Springfield nonprofit's After School Academic program, announced Vicky Watkins, Executive Director. Under the terms of the grant, the Sanctuary will receive $22,000 each year through 2012.
"My husband knew children and teens needed to learn and explore in a safe, nurturing environment in order to discover their greatest potential," said Jan Moran, Chairman and President of The Jim Moran Foundation. "Through our partnership with The Sanctuary, we are reaching out to our next generation of leaders and providing them with the opportunities and confidence they need for brighter futures."
The Sanctuary typically has 45 children, participating in a stimulating and well-rounded neighborhood, after school program for teens and children, ages 5 to 17. The children receive supervised assistance with homework, one-on-one and small group tutoring services and access to computers with instruction available in a computer lab. The children receive positive feedback and encouragement within a fun, but structured environment where they expand their view of the world and the possibilities that exist for them beyond their current circumstances.
"This grant represents hope for our Sanctuary kids," said Watkins. "The funds will assure the on-going development and evolution of a program that has already helped put children on the right path to becoming high school graduates and productive members of our community. We are very grateful to The Jim Moran Foundation for their support."
