Jacksonville, Fla. - Damon Edmond, a 2014 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, has been selected by The Jim Moran Foundation as this years North Florida African-American Youth Achiever. The award includes a four-year, needs-based scholarship to Florida State University (FSU).

Each year, a Duval County high school senior who qualifies for financial aid and has received admission to FSU is chosen for this legacy scholarship. Funding is provided through The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at FSU.

Outgoing and hardworking, Damon graduates this month as one of the top students in his class. Dual-enrolled at Florida State College of Jacksonville, Damon also recently received his AA degree. A well-rounded student, he participated in various extra-curricular activities, including varsity baseball, band and cross-country. Active in his local Boys & Girls Club since sixth grade, Damon was recognized with the Youth of the Year Award in 2011 and has accumulated 1,000 hours of community service.

Always trying to move forward along the "road of success," Damon said, "It may take time but I will get there --and that's the road I will be proud of."

"Now that I have this scholarship, I can tell my mom that when I promised that I would go to school without her worrying about me, I meant every word I said," he added.

With plans to major in Sports Medicine, Damon will begin FSU in Summer 2014.

"Through his determination to achieve success despite financial and personal hardships, Damon exemplifies what it means to be a Youth Achiever," said Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation. "We are confident he will continue to be a role model and work hard at FSU in order to reach his greatest potential."
