2013 Stanton Grad Named North Florida Youth Achiever by The Jim Moran Foundation and Awarded FSU Scholarship

Jacksonville, Fla. - Dayshon Mathis, a 2013 graduate of Stanton College Preparatory, has been selected by The Jim Moran Foundation as this year's North Florida African-American Youth Achiever. The award includes a four-year, needs-based scholarship to Florida State University (FSU).

Each year, a Duval County high school senior who qualifies for financial aid and has received admission to FSU is chosen for the award. Funding is provided through The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at FSU.

Interested in learning from a young age, Dayshon attributes much of his success to his mother's support and emphasis on school. His favorite subjects while at Stanton were physics, Latin and math -- and he recently graduated with a 4.2 weighted GPA. A Jacksonville-native, Dayshon has two younger brothers and believes his role of "big brother" means leading them in the right direction.

"The Jim Moran Scholarship has been a blessing to me and my family," said Dayshon. "With it, I can now go to Florida State University with little financial stress. When I learned that I had won this scholarship, I was very surprised. I then ran to my mom with a huge smile and told her the news. We were both very grateful and relieved to have received such a generous scholarship to such a prestigious school."

Dayshon will begin FSU in the Fall 2013 semester. After receiving a bachelor's degree in physics, he plans to continue his education with research in particle or astrophysics.

"As an exceptionally smart young man, Dayshon has a bright future ahead of him -- but, for Dayshon, his success isn't enough. He wants to motivate and help others reach their greatest potential," said Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation. "We are proud to recognize Dayshon not only for his academic achievements but for his commitment to inspire others along the way."
