HANDY's LIFE Extended TIL Program Receives $85,000 Grant From The Jim Moran Foundation

Monday, July 16, 2012
Fort Lauderdale, FL -- HANDY is pleased to announce a generous grant from The Jim Moran Foundation in the amount of $85,000. This grant will be utilized to develop HANDY's LIFE Extended Transitional Independent Living (TIL) program - providing enhanced life skills training and emergency support for at-risk youth in Broward County.

HANDY's LIFE Program (Life skills, Independent living, Foundation building, and Education/Employment) began in 2002 and was the first program of its kind in the state of Florida to serve dependency youth, ages 18-22, who do not qualify for foster care independent living programs. After realizing the urgent need for the youth transitioning from college or vocational school to the work force, HANDY expanded their program to serve youth in need of additional financial and emotional support. HANDY's LIFE Extended TIL program was developed to serve young adults ages 22-25 who are facing challenges and difficult circumstances.

Funding from The Jim Moran Foundation will be used to hire an additional HANDY LIFE Coach to provide short-term assistance for these young adults. In addition to LIFE Coaching, the funding will also provide emergency assistance to youth who are homeless or who are facing emergency situations and need temporary financial assistance in order to become stable. Youth served will be required to comply with the goals and guidelines of HANDY's existing TIL program in regard to academics, employment, remaining drug-free and becoming self-sufficient.

HANDY bases all of its programming on preparing disadvantaged youth for economic self-sufficiency by embracing, educating, and empowering these youth to become productive, successful citizens. Through this partnership, The Jim Moran Foundation and HANDY aim to transform their lives while positively engaging them in the broader community.

HANDY, founded in 1985, has met the needs of almost 50,000 children and youth in Foster and Relative/Non Relative Care under protective subversion. HANDY's mission is to embrace, educate and empower vulnerable youth to become engaged, productive adults. HANDY's programs focus on youth development, education and economic self-sufficiency.
