Two Nonprofits Serving the Hungry Each Receive $95,000; Grants Celebrate Jim Moran's Birthday

Students in the Clara White Mission's culinary arts program gain skills by preparing daily meals for the soup kitchen and often incorporate fresh herbs and vegetables from the Mission's gardens.

Hollywood and Jacksonville, Fla. -- In honor of what would have been automotive pioneer and philanthropist Jim Moran's 95th birthday on August 8th, The Jim Moran Foundation awarded two grants for $95,000 each to the Jubilee Center of South Broward in Hollywood and the Clara White Mission in Jacksonville. The funding will support the organizations' soup kitchen programs and other essential services for homeless and hungry individuals. Every year, The Foundation celebrates Jim Moran's life with "Founder's Day" grants -- one in North Florida and one in South Florida.

"Growing up in the Great Depression, my husband knew what it was like to be a young boy whose family had to scrimp and save to put food on the table and make hard decisions on what they could buy and what would have to wait until the next paycheck," said Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation. "Through The Foundation's new partnerships with the Clara White Mission and the Jubilee Center, Jim would be happy that we are helping families and individuals meet the demands of day to day living by not only providing wholesome, hot meals but also connecting them with support systems, job training and other resources that will help create stability and hope for brighter futures."

Open five days a week, the Jubilee Center operates almost entirely through committed volunteers. They cook and serve 150 nutritious lunches daily, while specially-trained volunteers work with clients on case management services.

"We are most grateful to The Jim Moran Foundation for their generous support," said Bill Bliss, board chair of the Jubilee Center. "Our mission is to provide emergency resources and relief, including food, clothing, shoes, IDs and hygiene items for the poor and homeless. But even more important is the caring attention of our volunteers who listen, understand and provide compassionate services."

The Clara White Mission was founded in 1904 but traces its history back to the 1880s when Dr. White's mother, former slave Clara White, fed hungry neighbors out of her Jacksonville home. Today the Mission serves approximately 145,000 hot meals annually, in addition to providing comprehensive services through its daily feeding, drop-in day center, transitional housing, vocational training and job placement programs for low-income or homeless individuals and veterans.

"This timely and amazing grant celebrating Jim Moran's birthday will allow the Clara White Mission an opportunity to continue to improve and affect the quality of life for the homeless and hungry in our community," said Ju'Coby Pittman, CEO and president of the Clara White Mission.

At the Jubilee Center of South Broward, volunteers cook and serve hearty lunches five days a week.

About the Jubilee Center of South Broward

The Jubilee Center is located in Hollywood, Florida and provides "emergency resources and relief from hunger and despair," primarily to the poor and homeless from Dania Beach, Hollywood and Hallandale Beach, plus many from the greater Fort Lauderdale area. Owned by four Episcopal Churches, Jubilee has been providing these services for almost 25 years. We practice respect and build dignity with our clients through sincere caring and listening combined with nutritious, tasty meals. Around 150 clients a day - Monday through Friday - receive a 1500 to 1800 calorie Noon meal. Jubilee also provides a wide range of Social Services including: temporary mailboxes, client IDs, assistance with government IDs, US food stamp certifications, hygiene supplies, clothing and county agency referrals. This is done with two paid staff and about 400 volunteers. Funding comes primarily from foundations, individuals, churches, city support and fund raising events. Contact Jubilee at (954) 920-0106 or JubileeHwd@hotmail.com. Find them on the web at www.jubileecenterbroward.org.
